I know that we’ve all been anxious a time or two but those of us with an anxiety disorder tend to feel misunderstood. I’m one of the many people in the world with this problem. I can’t express enough that it is so helpful when someone tries to be supportive and understanding.
1. It’s only anxiety.
You’d think this would be the right approach but nope! We know it’s anxiety but that’s not going to make it go away.
2. Why are you even anxious?
I always feel like this is so insulting. It feels like someone is asking because they don’t think there is a valid reason. Well.. to me it’s valid enough!
3. You should be medicated.
I’m not a big fan of anxiety medication or benzos anyway. If someone chooses to be medicated that’s fine but I’m not one of those people.
4. Freaking out.
This really isn’t something you’d say but more of an action. If you start freaking out were going to start doing the same times ten. We don’t want you to act like something is wrong.
5. I get nervous sometimes too.
It really sucks when someone tries to compare their everyday nervousness to your panic attack.
These are just a few of the things I hate to hear. We can’t expect everyone to be understand and accepting. If you simple ask of there is anything we need we would love you forever! Any effort of understanding is appreciated.
If you see someone that looks like they’re in distress just ask if they need anything. 💕
